Breast Augmentation

Breast Augmentation

The size and shape of your breasts play an important role in the physical balance and proportion of your overall appearance.  A successful breast augmentation is about more than simply enlarging your breasts. It’s about a mutual understanding between you and your surgeon—an understanding that encompasses your surgical goals, what’s driving those goals, and your underlying anatomy. Each augmentation is as individual and unique as the woman receiving it.

Who is it for?

If you are generally healthy, age 18 or older, and you wish to have fuller, more perky, or more symmetrical breasts, breast augmentation may be for you. It’s also a good option to plump formerly firm breasts, if age, pregnancy, or breastfeeding have left them droopy. It’s an excellent reconstructive option for patients whose breasts have been fully or partially removed due to breast cancer or other medical conditions.

What is treatment like?

At the Mid Florida Institute of Plastic Surgery, we offer both saline and silicone implants. Both types of implants are safe and FDA-approved. The implant will be placed either under the muscle (submuscular) or over the muscle (subglandular). During the initial consultation, your surgeon will help you decide which type of implant and placement is right for you.

Breast Augmentation is an outpatient surgery. You will be put under general anesthesia, and the incisions will be made in a way that ensures scarring is as minimal or disguised as possible. Scars will fade over time, and incision placement is hidden under the breasts crease. Surgery usually takes about two hours. You’ll need someone to take you and drive you home from the surgery center and to stay with you that first night. You’ll be sore for the next few days, and swollen, bruised, or tender for up to a few weeks. Initially, your implants may feel large or heavy, but that sensation will disappear once the swelling subsides.

What are the risks?

All surgeries may cause medical complications, so be aware and call your doctor if anything seems off. Don’t take aspirin, Advil, fish oil, or other blood thinners for two weeks before and after surgery, to avoid hematomas and excessive bleeding.

What are the results?

Your breasts will be larger and more symmetrical, and your figure will be more balanced. You’ll likely feel more self-confident and happy with your appearance. You’ll see results immediately, but it will take a few months for your implants to settle into their final shape.
